LIBRARY EXHIBIT OF THE AESTETICS
IN ART
The Aestetics in Art class has created a "dinner party"
and it's taking place now in the library and will be up for about two
weeks. The premise started as an art history project and each student
selected an artist of their choice and art field. They were to create
a place setting based on their artist that would represent the contribution
made to that particular field. Each place setting was to include everything
from the actual setting to menu to list of possible guests and a place
mat. The artists represented range from Twiggy (oh my gosh how could they
even know who she was?!) to Hawthorne to Dali to Andy Goldsworthy. Picasso
is represented along with Andy Warhol and many, many more. We invite you
to come by and see this amazing work done by these amazing students. To
view photoshraphs of their work just click

Party.

DRIVE BRINGS
IN 1800 CANS
Thank you Papa Johns
at Brodie Lane for donating the pizzas for the winning class - Gayla Hayes 506 cans donated!
The Photography Club at Bowie High School completed their
canned food drive. The Photography Club asked all 7th period teachers
to collect canned food for the canned food drive to help feed those less
fortunate during the holidays. Bowie staff and students collected almost
1500 cans of food during the two week period! There were many classes
that went above and beyond what was expected. A special thanks to Gayla
Hayes (506 cans), Kimberly Price (345 cans), Pam Platt (100 cans), Ignacio
Ruiz (74 cans), Charloote May (52 cans), Jill Harding (67 cans), Danielle
Lutzke (a whole bunch!), and all of the other teachers and their fabulous
students who helped out this year. When it was all said and done Bowie
staff and students collected almost 1800 non-perishable food items! The
food is being donated to Southwest Hills Community Church, which will
be providing the food to over 100 deserving families this Saturday.
A special thanks goes out to Papa
John's Pizza at 8106 Brodie Lane, for donating the pizzas
to feed Gayla Hayes and her incredible 7th period class
for having the most donations, 506 cans! Please visit
our sponsor, Papa Johns on Brodie Lane, to show our appreciation of their
generous donation of 8 large single topping pizzas to help feed those
hungry 7th period students of Ms. Hayes. Thank you to all those at Bowie,
students, and the parents who have suddenly realized that their pantry's
are bare - you are the best!
Industrial Vocational
Education Class
at Bowie High Earns American Cancer Society's
Spirit of Hope Award
Dear Matt Raby,
We are pleased to inform you that the Industrial Vocational
Education Class at Bowie High School has earned the American Cancer Society’s
Spirit of Hope Award. The Spirit of Hope Award is an in-kind award program
which recognizes non-monetary contributions with a $20,000 value or more.
This award is presented annually to community partners for
two types of contributions:
non-monetary or combined, and
media contributions of editorial and advertising
space or time.
Either type of contribution should have a fair market value of $20,000
or more. Fair market value is the price at which property would change
hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being required
to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of all the relevant
facts.
Bowie High School Industrial Vocational Education Class
has earned this prestigious award for the collation of materials for over
60,000 Relay For Life team captain packets. Relay For Life is the American
Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community
an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.
One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer within
their lifetime. The money raised at Relay saves lives by funding cutting-edge
cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts,
and life-affirming patient services. Your involvement makes this all possible.
Your class provided the American Cancer Society a cost savings
of approximately $27,000 for their participation in the coalation of Relay
For Life packet materials. We could not have been as successful without
your support.
We would like to present you, your students as well as your
administrator, Stephen Kane the Spirit of Hope award on Wednesday, November
15, 2006 at 9:30 a.m. at your school or on another day that is most convenient
for everyone involved.
Please let us know at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,

BOWIE STUDENTS SELECTED TO VISIT NASA THIS SUMMER
- Reece Parker, Andy Moore, and Daniel Cleveland of Bowie High
School in Southwest Austin will travel to NASA’s Johnson Space
Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas to participate in a one-week summer internship.
Nominated by Senator Jeff Wentworth, they have been selected out of
314 high school juniors from across Texas to be part of High School
Aerospace Scholars (HAS). They have been working to complete 10 Web-based
assignments during the school year. They will apply what they have learned
during the year, which will challenge them to work as part of a team
to design a mission to Mars. The weeklong experience at JSC includes
a tour of JSC facilities and briefings by noted NASA employees—including
astronauts. These young men and their teammates will conclude their
experience by presenting their proposal at a luncheon to their parents,
members of the Texas Legislature, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo,
Rotary NASA, and JSC senior management. The State of Texas, in partnership
with JSC and the Texas educational community, developed HAS in 1999
to encourage more students to pursue studies and careers in science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). More than 1200 students
from across Texas have participated in the program since its inception.
With this program, NASA continues the Agency’s tradition of investing
in the nation’s educational programs.

UIL AND V.A.S.E. STUDENTS WIN BIG!
ACCOUNTING UIL RESULTS - The following
UIL Accounting students sponsored by Jennifer Vance competed at the UIL
Invitational meet at Del Valle High School on Saturday. The competition
results are Drew Ingram placed 1st, Vivian Hui placed 3rd,and Hiu Phan
placed 6th. The Bowie Accounting team placed 1st. Please congratulate
these students for their hard work.
MATH UIL RESULTS - Four students from Bill Russel's
UIL Math team posted four of the top five scores in the math competition
(first, second, third, and fifth) at the UIL Invitational meet at Del
Valle High School. The team score blew out the next closest school by
more than a 50% margin. The Bowie team arrived late to the competition
due to a schedule change that they were not notified of in time, and therefore
they were not able to receive a trophy or garner any team points for their
efforts. Despite this set back, they wanted to still compete for the pure
joy of competition and for the personal satisfaction of a job well done.
Bill Russell said, "I was extremely proud of how my students handled
this situation. They gave up a Saturday afternoon to attend this competition
only to find out that we had arrived too late for them to qualify for
awards. To a person, they kept their senses of humor and remained positive
throughout an experience which would have caused lesser students to become
angry or upset. " Bowie is proud of these outstanding young men and
women for exemplifying our school motto, Pride in Performance,
through their actions and competitive spirit. Team members include Lewis
Chang, Lauren Guckert, Sam Graves, and Daeun Yoon.
V.A.S.E. RESULTS - Bowie is proud to announce results
from the V.A.S.E. (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) competition held this
weekend. This competition is held every year, first as a Regional Event
and then selected work goes to a State-wide competition. This year 11
students from Martha Anne Kuntz's Art 3 and Advanced Placement took a
total of 18 pieces for competition. There were over 900 entries. By the
end of the day, we took home 15 Golds and two of the student's pieces
were selected to go on to State! Please congratulate the following students

I wanted to share with you some very positive moments from
yesterday's band competition. As many of you know, Bowie
did make it to the State UIL Finals. They competed with a group of phenomenal
bands, and they were selected to be in the finals competition which began
at 7:45 last night.
This was after a very difficult trip to San Antonio which
involved a bus that broke down and the equipment trailer getting stuck
on I-35 behind a huge traffic snarl that actually delayed the equipment's
arrival and caused our band to have to be rescheduled for preliminaries.
They had a wonderful performance in the finals, and they
came in 8th in the State. I know they are very proud of this as they leave
on their trip to Indianopolis today. But, I think you should be proud
of them for more than just this accomplishment. Our students were so impressive
in their conduct at the event. They sat together throughout the finals,
watched attentively as each band competed, and when Akins came on the
field in the finals, our students stood up and cheered for them. I thought
it was wonderful that they were so supportive of our neighboring school,
and I was very proud of them.
When they return, I hope you will have an opportunity to
praise them for their conduct and for their spirit.
